Why Your AI Wrapper is Not a Product
Wrapping an API doesn't make you a founder. Here's what separates real AI products from glorified prompt playgrounds.
Every week, a new 'AI startup' launches that is, functionally, a ChatGPT wrapper with a custom system prompt and a Stripe integration. And every week, most of them die. Here's why.
The wrapper trap
An API wrapper has zero defensibility. The moment OpenAI updates their UI to include your feature, you're dead. The moment a competitor copies your prompt, you're dead. The moment the user realizes they can just use the API directly, you're dead.
What makes a real AI product
A real AI product has at least one of these: proprietary data that makes it better over time, a workflow integration so deep that switching costs are high, a multi-model architecture that no single API can replicate, or a feedback loop that creates compounding value.
SUMA-AI worked because it didn't just generate content.it learned each user's voice over time. The more you used it, the better it got. That's a product. A text box that calls GPT-4 is not.
If your product breaks when the API changes pricing, you don't have a product. You have a dependency.
The test
Ask yourself: if the underlying model disappeared tomorrow, would your product still have value? If the answer is no, you're not building a product. You're renting one. Start building the parts that only you can build.
